WEEK 39: Emergency Corn
23) Chef HorlacherWe have smartphones now that take way better photos so get ready for a BUNCHA pictures.TUESDAYToday for lunch we went to lady's house who prepared a HUGE pot of rice for me because I'm known as the infamous burger eater in Brazil. Sadly I wan't very hungry today so I couldn't eat it all and she was severely disappointed. This happens frequently.WEDNESDAYLooots of work today. We taught two new SOLID people and another one of our families has started to progress a lot more. They're planning on church this Sunday.Today the zone leaders took the 6 hour bus ride up to our area to spend the day with us. It was nice to see another missionary's face haha. They brought me a box from home! (THANKS MOM <3) and it had a step-counter so now I can finally know how many miles we walk each day.Climax of the week:I got locked in a bathroom today. At an investigator's house I went and used the bathroom and when I shut the door I heard everyone go "NOOOO" ( or "Nãooooo" in Portuguese). I looked back and realized there was no handle on the door haha. They tried to open it from their side but it needed a key that they had lost. Anyways I had some time in there to just hang around while they looked for the key. That's when my eyes came across a strange box on the wall next to the toilet. It said "In case of emergency, break glass" and within the box was a cob of corn.I spent the rest of the night trying to understand that.HALLOWEEN:D HAPPY HALLOWEEN. Probably the second best holiday of the year.It felt wrong to not do any form of celebration here so I called up a few friends in the Araguaína branch and we met up at Cimba park to sing a bunch of hymns (and have some cake bc in Brazil if you have an activity there HAS to be cake haha). I brought along my uke too. I was surprised at the turnout because I didn't expect really anyone to show up but pretty much everyone invited came AND two investigators. We took a whole bunch of pics below.FRIDAYNot much happened today because we went to the doctor cuz Elder Franças shoes were giving him trouble.SATURDAYSame ole Saturday shenanigans with English class and whatnot. Tonight I taught the ABC's and how to say a prayer in english. No one in our house really slept last night because it got SO hot during the night.SUNDAYWe met some pretty rad people today that we're going to start teaching.Last night I called up 13 of our investigators and confirmed that they'd be at church the next day. They all said they'd be there bright and early and when we arrived at the chapel today there was exactly ONE that showed up.That just happens on the mission. It's frustrating because as missionaries we pour our hearts out and walk miles and miles just to try to change people's lives, but lots of times they don't go to church or take the steps they need to to become a better person. It kind of feels like a slap in the face when people don't follow through with their promises and go to church, after all that we've gone through to teach them. But at the end of the day you just have to shake it off and keep on going. If you let it bother you it can really break you down. It's a good lesson to learn at least. Here's to next week.Elder YoungPICS:1- 3) A Papagayo bird at a friend's house.
